LOUISIANA ICEGATORS WAIVE GOALIE BEECH, PICK UP O’BRIEN
Lafayette, Louisiana—The Louisiana IceGators have waived goaltender Kevin Beech. This season, Beech had an .862 save percentage and a goal allowed average of 3.78. To fill the void, the IceGators traded cash to Augusta for rookie goalie B. J. O’Brien. In six games this season with the RiverHawks, O’Brien had a save percentage of .920 and a goals allowed average of 2.29.
“I thought this was an opportunity to solidify our goaltending,” said IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski. “I did some homework on him before the trade. Players around the league say he’s an unreal goalie. Right now, he’s the number-1 goalie in the league.”
O’Brien played college hockey at St. Norbert in De Pere, Wisconsin. He won two NCAA Division III National Championships while playing for the Green Knights. O’Brien began the season in the Central Hockey League with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. He played one game there before being sent to Augusta.
Kaminski was very impressed with O’Brien after their initial phone conversation. “He’s coming into the league with some great confidence,” said Kaminski. “He’s very excited to come here. His attitude seemed great. With (Dan) Earles and him in goal, it will be nice to see the two of them push each other.”
In another transaction, IceGator forward Robert Short was called up to Rio Grande Valley of the CHL.
